What is the VAT rate on electricity?

If I buy something online from the UK, am I charged their rate of VAT?

  • It's a computer over €1000 euro and I'm buying from the UK because of the lower VAT (20% compared to 23%). Am I charged the UK rate? I heard somewhere that when you buy from WITHIN the EU, the VAT rate applies to the country you're buying from. If you buy OUTSIDE the EU, you're charged your country's VAT? Can someone clarify please. Thank you

  • Answer:

You'll be charged VAT at the point of retail, but if you take the goods for permanent export outside the European Community may reclaim the VAT at your exit port from UK Customs. Note that the scheme does not apply to mail order or internet sales; it's for personal exports only. See paragraph 2.8 in the link below.

Other answers

If you are buying from within the EU, VAT is collected at the rate at the point of sale, i.e. the country that you are buying from. If you are buying from outside of the EU, VAT is not supposed to be charged at all.

If you are importing from the UK to a EC country and VAT has already been paid you won't have to pay again, if not then you pay your own countries rate, you are correct .
