What jobs are good for schizophrenics?

What types of jobs work/deal with schizophrenics?

  • My mother is a paranoid schizophrenic. I've grown up around her hallucinations, violent outburts, etc but I really love her & I'm getting ready to go to college, so I think I'd like to go to school to help people like her but I'm not sure which specific jobs deal with schizophrenia. Can anyone give me some ideas to explore?

  • Answer:

Psychiatrist is the primary professional because they deal with the full range of cases (people who can remain in the community through to people who need long term hospitalisation). It requires the completion of a medical degree then postgrad/specialist study. It could take 10 years to complete. The other closely related profession is that of a Psychologist. They work in private practice and are employed by hospitals as well. Whereas psychiatrists treat primarily with medication and other medical treatments, psychologists will do talk therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Time of completion is around 6 years. Finally, Mental Health Nurse is another that works in this area - in acute or long stay mental health facilities. Time to completion is around 4 years. Hope that helps.
