I'm thinking about a major in Journalism, but not sure what language/area study to minor in...?

Hey everyone, so I have a few options. I want nothing more than to be a journalist but I know it's such a hard field to break into, and there's little chance for employment. So I know if I know another language, that will be really useful. I already know some Mandarin and it's one of the easier languages for me to study. (I've tried learning Latin, Italian, Spanish--all with no success. Mandarin's the only language that I find relatively easy) And while I love the language and the script, I'm sadly just completely uninterested in China or the Chinese people (And the sad thing is, I'm half Chinese!) On the other hand, I love the religion of Islam and I love learning about the Middle East. I love reading up on it, and I would love to eventually travel there. So I'm thinking of a minor in Middle East Studies with a certificate of proficiency in either Arabic or Persian. Hard decisions all around! I haven't tried learning either of the two languages but I just want your opinion on which language/area study would be more beneficial to a career in news producing or journalism. Thanks, Fal

Answer:
You've obviously done a lot of research and I think it's a very wise decision to study a language along journalism :) If the Middle East is what you're interested in, then go for it! Middle East Studies would be very impressive to any employer (especially one looking for a foreign correspondent in Egypt, Iraq, Tunisia, etc!) And I would definitely advise Arabic over Persian as it's much more widely spoken and is the language of the Qu'ran, which is a key aspect of the Islam religion. And I know you've said you're not interested in China or Chinese people, but it would make you SO much more employable if you could speak Mandarin fluently too! So my advice would be to keep up studying that at the same time, just so you don't lose whatever level of proficiency you have already managed to attain. Hope I helped ;) xx

If you're interested in Arabic, go for it. It's a great area to study. And it's nice to see a smart journalism major who recognizes the need for another study area. :) I really wish you good luck.
If your thinking about going into journalism, I would have said Spanish. But since that doesn't work for you, if you really like to learn about the middle east, Arabic and Hebrew are languages I would recommend. I've taken a Journalism class, as well as a yearbook class before, so I coud talk to my old teacher about what to do for Journalism. My opinion is that if you want to go into Journalsim and you passion is the middle east, learn as much as you can about the region and the job pursue you want over there. Hope this helps. :)
