Is there a way to fix home folder permissions remotely?

Unlock/Change name of User folder?

  • I have taken over a Windows 7 computer that the girl previous to me had set up. I have changed all of the names (user name, computer name) to my own. Still, my user drive is left as her name. Even though this isnt a huge issue, I need to sort out the best way to fix this for the future. I will be working in IT, and should know how to fix this& how it happened. 1) What setting did she check/is it a default setting that your user account is locked? I have all permissions necessary; I am in the account& have admin controls. If you dont know what Im talking about: My Computer>C:\\>Users>Right Click Your User Account>Properties 2) Is there anyway I can unlock and/or rename this folder? I realize that I can create another user account, give it admin permissions, and copy all of the files over. Once again, I's asking if there is a better, smarter way.

  • Answer:

Unfortunately, there isn't (to my knowledge) any smarter way short of creating no less than THREE separate user account folders for correctly copy all files over without fault. The reason for this is simply that the user files are in use by the system - you might as well ask why it's not a good idea to pull the processor out when the system's powered up. Which also accounts for why you'll need three separate users set up... User 1: Account you want to rename - Contains system locked files inside which would end up corrupted by unlocking and copying. User 2: Account where you want to copy the files to. You couldn't log in as this user and copy the files across as then this folder would have the system locked files in. User 3: Temp account - use this account to swap files from User 1 to User 2 as this account is the only one with system locked files. It's a mess about, but I've yet to see a quicker way without damaging files...
