Can anyone recommend a dome tent for Scout troops?
-
Our Boy Scout troop has purchased around 30 Eureka Sunrise 8 and 9 dome tents over the past nine years. The ten tents purchased over the past three years have been junk. We've broken about 3/4 of the poles on the new tents on the 1st or 2nd use. It takes weeks or months to get replacements from Eureka and the last few times they sent the wrong length poles. We really like the design of the Sunrise tents, but the pole issues are pushing us to look at other tents. Can anyone recommend a decent dome tent with aluminum or fiberglass poles? We don't want the cheap discount store tents with plastic floors. Neither do want a super expensive tent either. Our hope is over the years to replace all of our tents with the same model. It makes it easier for the Scouts when all the tents are the same. The setup is the same and no arguing about who gets what model of tent.

Answer:
We sure as heck aren't going to do the army tents. Insect screening is a necessity in Minnesota for the spring, summer, and early fall. 25 years ago the Scout troop had army type pup tents and they were just too small plus they got moldy as the material takes forever to dry. The Boy Scout summer camps will rent canvas wall tents pretty cheap, but then the Scouts have to bring mosquito netting. We used to use Timberline tents, but some of the leaders wanted fiberglass poles and the roominess of the dome tent design. The issues with the Timberline was the zippers. The Scouts would grab the corner of the door and just pull which killed the zippers. Galyans had Eureka make a special version of the Timberline for them and they had #10 zippers that lasted a lot longer.

You might want to try the Wenzel Alpine Blue and Gold WalMart has them for about $45 each. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Wenzel-Alpine-8.5-x-8-Tent-Blue-and-Gold/13228636 I just bought one of these last week and used it for our Leave No Trace Train the Trainer camp out last weekend and it was easy to set up and take down (only two poles) and quite roomy.

?? My first concern is that you are breaking these poles this quickly. I'm *still* using 4 tents that my Troop bought 35 years ago when I was a youth, and which ended up with our family because my father was the last Scoutmaster of the troop. These tents were used at *least* 6 times per year - and in a few cases, were probably used closer to 20 or even 25 times in a single year. I currently use them quite a bit less (perhaps twice a year) mainly because I use Hennessy Hammocks for most of my 'regular' camping, and toss one or two tents into my vehicle for camps where car-camping may be needed, or where I think we may need storage tents for gear. The last Scoutmaster of the troop I am currently with (R.I.P. Mr Sam) had bought 8 dome-tents that were on a close-out special at Walmart about 10 years ago. Those tents lost an average of one tent-pole to breakage (per tent) each year. We repaired, scavanged, and combined for over 5 years. And it was only when we couldn't salvage any more (and we were starting to use un-matching tents to bolter our needs) that we picked up about a dozen used Philmont (A-frame) tents. Troop still uses these, though some parents have finally realized that if they want new tents, they either have to pony up the cash, or they need to get their boys to get out and do some fund-raising. Whatever tents you get - I recommend you put a quartemaster (adult) and quartermaster aide (youth) in charge of them - and enforce troop policies about tent damage, poles being damaged due to horseplay, and 'lost' tent-pegs. (I make my own tent-pegs out of heavy-duty wire 'found' shortly after certain political events.... as good as any commercial pegs I've seen so far, and better than almost any of the plastic pegs sold at some of the department stores. I've ''loaned'' out nearly 50 of these tent-pegs - - depleting my stock out of my own tents and gear - and seen as much as 1/2 and as little as 0% returned. My new policy - - I ''sell'' tent-pegs at $1 @. If I get my pegs back, the boy(s) that have borrowed them get their $ back. If I don't, the troop gets a donation toward the gear-fund. Boys have become **much** better at locating ''lost'' pegs.)
