What would home insurance be in London?

Sooo I can't afford my insurance and the car is in my name, can someone else drive it for now?

  • I can't afford my insurance just yet so I want to work for a bit and save until I can pay it off in one. Even though the car is in my name, can my brother get insurance on it and be listed as the main driver so he can drive around in it for a few months? I heard of this new thing called 'fronting' so don't want this to occur. Also, lets say I bought the car and wanted to leave it in London whilst im at university because I cannot afford the insurance. Can I be listed as second driver so I can drive it around a lil when I visit home...but leave it in London so my brother can use the car mainly?? What happens if I list him as the main driver then and im the second driver (but the car is registered in my name). This 'fronting' thing is all quite confusing but i want to make sure that i am not breaking any laws. Your advice is appreciated. Thanks xx

  • Answer:

To insure something, you have to have an insurable interest in it. With motor insurance, the person with the insurable interest is the person who owns the car as they are the one who would lose out financially in the event of a loss. As such, when your brother states that he does not own the car, it is unlikely that the insurer will offer him cover as he has no insurable interest. You could add him on as a named driver. Provided you tell the insurer he is the main user, then it is not fronting as you have not misled the insurer.

Fronting is not new. It was well established when I was learning to drive in 1990. It is where someone with a low risk (often a parent) claims to be the main driver of a vehicle in order to lower insurance payments, when the main driver is actually someone with a much higher risk (the teenage son/daughter). It is quite possible that you could insure the car in your name, but with your brother as the main driver. You have good reason for your brother to be the main driver if both he and the car are in London and you are at university somewhere else, and the insurance company should accept that. I would call them and discuss it before you agree to anything, and even explain it in writing, so that in the event of a claim they have been given all the details. Alternatively your brother could insure the car in his name, with you as a named additional driver, but he will have to explain to the insurance company why he is not the car's registered keeper. Many insurance companies do allow this, but not all.

I cant answer all your complicated points, but my advice would be you find a reputable insurance broker in your town (not on the net) so you can talk face to face and they will be able to advice you and arrange your policy if you want. Hope this helps.

yes providing they get insured first to drive your car

UK answer is that the car has to be insured by the person who owns it as they are the ones with the "insurable interest" in the car. "Fronting" is when you say you're not the main driver when you are, or vice versa, so this would not be the case in this instance. You'd be better off leaving it SORN and not having it insured at all until you're ready to use it, just make sure it's parked off the road and secure! You also need to declare where it's kept overnight, and if you say it's kept at your home address and it's really kept at your uni address (which could be a far more expensive place to insure it) then that's also insurance fraud.

I was not familiar with the term fronting with respect to car insurance so I looked it up. It appears to be illegal per the link below. Anyway, the insurance can only be issued to the owner of the vehicle. Someone else can pay the premium but it has to be in the name of the legal owner. If you can't afford the insurance put your car up on blocks and cancel the insurance and licence plates. When you can afford it you can apply for it. Your only required to have valid insurance and plates when it is on the road being driven.
