How much should I pay to study in A-Level?

Got a irish passport! Can i study in Ireland or the EU on a study now-pay later scheme?

  • Will i be able to study at a Technical College or University in the EU or Ireland specifically on a student loan basis? Tertiary fees are not cheap to pay up front...

  • Answer:

All Irish students pay a flat fee of €3,000 (subject to change year to year) in registration charges. They get four years from the government of only having to pay registration fees, so most students don't need loans and banks don't have loans specifically aimed at students. The reasoning behind this is that those students and their parents have already paid for their four years in taxes. Therefore, a student must have legally lived and paid taxes in Ireland for at least three of the last five years in order to avail of discounted education. If they haven't lived in Ireland for this time the normal EU/non-EU rates apply and all fees must be paid upfront in full, regardless of citizenship. Other EU countries will have their own rules. Oh, and to whoever said to contact the CAO, only Irish students (living in Ireland) apply through the CAO. Foreign students must apply directly to the college.

Your Irish passport will allow you to come and live in Ireland for as long as you like. We don't do college fees on a student loan basis in Ireland, unless you organise a private loan yourself with a bank. At the moment tuition fees for third level education are free (except for the registration fee €2500 which every student must pay) ...... and yes, you would qualify for free education ..... eventually. The rules are that you must be living here (or in Europe) for 3 of the 5 previous years. If you are applying for a student maintenance grant, it is based on your parents' income - which means they must be living here too, for those 3 out of 5 years. It is applied for through the County Council of whichever county you (and they) are living in. Read all about it here http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/education/third_level_education/fees_and_supports_for_third_level_education/fees.html If you are not prepared to wait at least another 3 years to get to college, you will just have to pay the non-EU fees, and they are high.

To my knowledge, this loop hole has extended itself to free education in Scotland, but everyone, and I mean everyone, has caught wind of this so it will be awful trying to get in anywhere over there I think... It will work in a couple of places, not all. You have to ring the universities and colleges yourself and they'll tell you. Other than this, I know very little... Good luck :)

Contact the CAO for more information: www.cao.ie. I think it only applies if you lived in the EU for 3 years before applying to college/university.
