Motorcycle Chain Problem.

Motorcycle chain rapidly becoming looser?

  • I bought my latest motorcycle (Derbi GPR125 4T) a few weeks back, and its obvious that it will need a new set of sprockets soon as the pins are getting sharper by the day. The problem I've been having, is that the chain is loosening by itself at an alarming rate; for example, I tightened it to 30mm of slack on Sunday and on Tuesday morning it has expanded to 95mm. My main question is, will replacing the sprockets and purchasing a new chain solve this problem? If not, what should I do? Thank you in advance.

  • Answer:

The chain can't possibly stretch that much in such a short space of time. Something is wrong with your re-tightening procedure. I've replaced sprocket & chain sets a couple of times and it doesn't make a massive difference. Sprocket wear is always very minimal.

Your missing something. There is no way a chain will loosen that much in a few days. Are you checking the tight spot in the chain every time? Are your alignment marks correct? Are you tightening the rear axle nut to the specification? Ok guys he gained 65mm (Almost 2.6 inches) of slack in 2 days. He has something else going on.

Chains tend to do this when they are at their service limits. At the end of their life, the chain will start to stretch rapidly, requiring adjustment more often. Your chain is worn out. Replace the chain and both sprockets, keep it clean and lubed and adjusted properly and it will last a good long time.

Next time, try a bike sporting the shaft drive system. No issues at all out of my 03 Honda. Check the fluid occasionally to be sure the differential is full and clean. Nothing gets caught, nothing stretches no sprockets. Just good carefree fun ridin'!

Replace the sprockets and chain and keep the new one lubricated.

That's what you need to do right away. Rapid loosening means the chain is about to break.
