What do I need to record vocals?

  • Hi, I wanted to get a professional microphone to record vocals, but Im totally new to recording and all of the equipment, so im pretty confused. I would like to be able to record onto my computer, and I found this microphone which seems pretty nice. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/mxl-mxl-990-condenser-microphone-with-shockmount/273156000000000 So what else would I need with this? Just the mic stand? Do I need to buy any cords to connect to my computer, or an amp? Thank you!!

    Hi there! The microphone looks good, here´s a list, of what you need to record. 1. Mic Stand (like you said) 2. A Pop-Filter, to put in Front of the Mic, a cheap one will do 3. A XLR Cable to connect the Mic to the audiointerface 4. An audiointerface, a good one is the Focusrite Sapphire 6, you need this to connect the microphone to your computer. http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio_interfaces/saffire_6_usb/ it´s easy to use and not that expenisive, and all you need to get started. You can also connect your midi keyboard, guitar, bass to it and record it. 5. A recording software, the interface Focusrite Sapphire 6 comes with a software called Ableton Live, also very good and you won´t need to buy an extra recording software. These can be very expensive, like Logic Pro and Cubase. That´s it, I think! Greets, Miss KK

Purchase that mic. You will need a pre amp to supply power to the mic and also adjust input and output of sound. Best cheap preamp is a "ART tube MPStudio", get a pop filter.. buy two sets of XLR wires. One XLR wire will need to have the 3 prongs.. one end to the mic and one end to the preamp box. The other XLR will need to connect from pre amp in to a 1/8th stereo adapter which will go into the computer's mic input. Get some headphones and a stand. Use Cool Edit Pro for software.
