Is it possible to catch fish in a swampy lake?

I live in TX and fish Lake Nasworthy, what is the best way to catch cats and hybrids in a low lv lake?

  • I usually fish a slip rig with a 1/2 oz weight and anywhere from a 2/0 to a 4/0 circle hook tipped with cut shad and perch, as well as live shad and perch ranging from 2 to 4 inches long and just get it stolen, with no moment of the rod whatsoever. I figured its turtles and decided to try a slip rig underneath a float and haven't got a bite that way in about 2 weeks, now i need to mention that i have no boat so i am fishing form the bank, but have the right equipment to get my bait far out into the lake. The lake is a constant level lake where the average depth is 10ft to 18ft I just tried shrimp tonight before i got stormed on and caught only one 16 inch channel but had several bites but no takes. I'm pursuing big catfish as well as nice pan fryers, but have yet to catch a decent size catfish. I also have heard from a couple of fisherman here stating there is hybrids in the lake as well but they just don't help me out. I need die hard methods for the fact that i am a die hard fisherman and i am not afraid to try new things or extreme things as well. is there anybody who can PLEASE HELP me OUT

  • Answer:

Your hooks are way to small for fish you are targeting and the bait you are using. Using circles, you need a much bigger hook than you think. My minimum is a 5/0, but I usually use around a 7/0. I've caught channels as small as 1/2 lb up to 30 lb blues on the 7/0 size. Also, remember that the gap on a circle needs to be as clear as possible. If the bait is blocking the gap, it can't turn correctly and you'll miss the hookup. Get a big enough hook, set your bait right, and circles will do their magic for ya.

I grew up fishing in San Angelo. My father taught me how to catch fish every time, especially catfish. I prefer trot lines myself even though I do own a bass boat. lol I still use this procedure to this very day in every lake I fish. I am 49 years old and have fished all of my life. Sounds like you know what your doing but need a little push. 1. Burlap sack filled with scratch grain mix, corn and beet pellets which can be bought at one of the many feed stores there in San Angelo. 2. Make yourself a pretty hefty bag, say 20 lbs or better. 3. Wire the bag shut very tight and find yourself a 10 pound rock or so to attach to it using a good nylon rope. 4. Go out to your favorite fishing spot hopefully where no one else fishes and will most likely not see what your doing. 5. Throw the bag as far into the water as you can sinking it to the bottom. I recommend you do this on a Wednesday if you want to start fishing on Saturday. This process will draw in the big cats, the rest is up to you. Remember this: I have learned that river fishing is good but you really need to get into the deep water. If not, stay away from coves (turtles and snakes) and only fish points. I usually caught the biggest shad with my 4' throw net south of the Military recreation site. Always at dusk or dawn when they feed the best. Happy fishing. ( [email protected])
