Why are our eyes colored?

Why don't Asians have light colored eyes?

  • If eye color is in correlation with the amount of melanin the body possesses, then why don't Asians have lighter eye colors, they seem pretty light skinned to me? But I've seen darker skinned non-asians with really light eyes before. The mutation of the first European to adapt to the cold is the most common explanation, but if the climate in both Asia and Europe was cold enough to develop light skin, then how come the former never mutated light eyes?

  • Answer:

Dark colored eyes are the dominant genotype. Some asians do have gray or hazel eyes but when they reproduce with other asians the dark color will almost always trump the light eyed genotype. Also, I believe dark eyes are more adapted because the color reduces glare and helps with seeing in the dark, but lighter eyes can help see colors better.
