Is it safe to take the Amtrak alone?

Should I take the Amtrak train or a bus?

  • I will be traveling with my 3 year old and sisters from chicago to Texas. My 2 options to get there is the amtrak or the bus I would prefer to take a plane but its out of my price range. Does anyone have any experience with either of these. I have been on a bus once for 8 hrs and it was not very fun. If you have taken the amtrak could you explain how it works with eating and sleeping? I would take coach the cheapest tickets.

  • Answer:

Take the train. That would be the most economical as well as enjoyable way to get to Texas. For you and your 3 year old Amtrak wants $223.50 to go down on May 21st. Greyhound wants $242 for their online rate, $269 regular fare and Southwest is way over that. Check their websites, www.amtrak.com www.greyhound.com and www.southwest.com. They have fare finders that you can play around with for different days and times. Basically you're looking at 22 hours, an overnighter, on the Amtrak Texas Eagle. The Grey Dog is about the same duration but some buses seem to make it a little faster than the train; that's kind of odd. They all require 1 or 2 transfers. Since they, one, cost more, two, require transfers and three are claustrophobic, I'd forget about it. Southwest is the highest at around $350 regular fare and then you've got all the hassle of security, being strip searched, lol, and all that crap. Just kidding, but that's a lot of crap to go through just to get there a little sooner. Flights take about 6 hours plus security and check in time and most require transfers. I'd avoid the strain and take the train. That settled, your train will have a lounge car with seats facing out and glass that curves up over the roof for a great view and snacks available for purchase. It will have a diner car serving 3 meals a day at prices roughly similar to Denny's. You can get up and walk through the whole train except the first class which is usually the front part of the train. I think you guys would enjoy the train more than your two options.

I think you'll be surprised how expensive AMTRAK is. I'd expect the bus to be a good deal cheaper, but much less pleasant to travel on. Not sure where in Texas your heading, but I'd be shocked if you could not get there inexpensively on Southwest Air leaving from Midway. If it was me, I'd take AMTRAK, simply because the trip would bemore interesting, there would be fewer creeps aboard and there would be more space and things to do with my child. Astrobuf

Buses are great for short distances, trains are great for longer distances even though they're extremely expensive. Take the Amtrak. But why don't you fly, seriously? Train tickets cost just as much.
