What are my chances of getting into the Air Force Academy?
-
Hello, im a junior in high school and i wanted to know what my chances of getting into the Air Force Academy, so far i have: A 3.2 unweighted Gpa and a 4.2 weighted gpa I have not taken my SATS or ACTs yet I have taken a total of 4 AP classes throughout high school(scoring a 5 on the AP World Exam) and the rest of my classes were Honors I am in National Honor Society for 2 years already where i do many community projects I swim for high school and club where i serve as captain of my swim team and have gone to regionals for the past 3 years, i have obtained 1st and 2nd place for the 50 free in my district, and i recieved 7th place for the 50 free out of over 200 swimmers in my county, i also have a varsity letter for all 3 years. I play tennis(Have 3 varsity letters) I have been in CAP(civil air patrol) during middle school but quit after i entered into JROTC in high school(i was only an airman but i went through encampment) I do JROTC Raiders, Drill, Exhibition and a colorgaurd events where i present the colors at large events such as a GOP convention in my county, university graduation, etc. For JROTC i have served as squad leader, platoon sergeant, platoon leader, and company xo. Im also in fire explorers where i ride along with firefighters/paramedics assisting them on calls, i served on the competition team winning 3rd place in the county, i do public service events in the city for the firefighters, and i will become a lieutenant in the program in the upcoming weeks. I have been accepted to the AFA Summer seminar and completed all my paperwork which means i will be going there this summer. I am also in good contact with my city commissioner who said that he is good friends with my district representative giving me a guarantee in recieving a congressional nomination. I have wanted to get into the Academy since the beggining of middle school because flying in the Air Force is my lifelong goal and passion as well as helping others which is why i want to serve my country, i love military discipline and everything about the military. If i do not seem competitive for the academy can someone please tell me how i could become considered for the Air Force Academy Prep School and if im not competitive for that...then can someone tell me what schools (besides embry riddle, since its my second choice if i do not get accepted to the academy) are the best for the aeronautical angineering/aeronautical science that have the best air force rotc programs?

Around half of summer seminar participants become Usafa Cadets.... http://i55.tinypic.com/21341f5.gif .... and not all participants offered an appointment accept, so better than 50%. It would help to know Psat or Plan scores since you don't have Sat or Act scores and at least Psat or Plan scores are required to apply for summer seminar. It does not sound like you are recruit caliber for swimming since that usually requires going to states and winning or placing fairly high. Diversity attributes are not mentioned and besides applicants who exhibit outstanding academic and athletic attributes, that is the other attribute sought in pre candidates admitted to summer seminar. The Air Force Academy website offers outstanding advice to students prepping for a service academy, rotc scholarship or any highly selective university. Open all links to the left of the dialog box. Be sure to open the "Leadership Preparation" link and read it carefully." http://www.academyadmissions.com/#Page/Preparation Page 19 of Chapter 2 of the Naval Academy Catalog indicates classes for a high school student to take to make himself competitive for admission. The classes are arranged in a hierarchy: http://www.usna.edu/Catalog/ Helpful to read the advice on prepping for college offered on Harvard's website: http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/preparing/index.html The selection process is nearly identical at the Naval Academy, West Point, and the Air Force Academy, so, whatever is stated on one service academy website or in its catalog with regard to admissions, course selection etc generally holds for the others. If you read the following answer and open the links it should help to explain the selection process and the path to an appointment: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akhc017ydUhl4cmaSh5LBsHty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20101109140847AAZvjcJ The application cycle for the service academies begins December 1 of junior year when the Air Force Academy begins accepting pre candidate questionnaires from juniors applying to attend the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar. West Point SLS begins accepting pre candidate questionnaires in mid December. The Naval Academy Summer Seminar begins accepting preliminary applications on February 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao1hC8StUWw Uscga AIM also begins accepting applications in February. It is best to apply to all since they are similar and going to one indicates to the Admissions Boards at all that a Candidate is well aware of the regimented lifestyle of an academy Cadet/Midshipman. An applicant needs Psat, Sat or Act scores to be considered for the Summer Seminars. The Psat Math section tests Algebra 1 and Geometry and should be taken the first time the Fall after completing these classes. The Psat is only offered once each October. The Sat Math section tests Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry and should be taken the first time the Spring of the year taking Algebra 2. The Act Math section tests these subjects and Trigonometry. An extracurricular reading program looking up unknown words in a dictionary helps with the Cr and Writing sections of the Sat: http://reading.berkeley.edu/ Colonel Batchelder indicates the attributes SLS seeks in applicants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRWc9GiSMCA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpNFCPJwJAc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jiaxwjt6vuo All the summer programs seek pre-candidates with essentially the same attributes. Usna's is the largest accepting 2250, Usafa Summer Seminar accepts 1125 and West Point SLS 1,000. As for other schools, I would not recommend Embry Riddle or senior military colleges for aeronautical engineering but the best schools in that field with Afrotc: Stanford, MIT, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Purdue(cannot recommend due to the lack of grade inflation which impacts chances at a pilot slot.), Illinois, U of Texas, Cornell, U of Minn etc Also, an undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering is probably better for doing grad work in Aero Eng than an undergrad degree in Aero. Often Aero and Mechanical are in the same department. Good Luck!

I'll use The Naval Academy's class of 2015 as a example. 19,145 Applicants Offers of appointment? 1,4261 Those in the Class? Men. . . 993 Women. 236 Total= 1,229 52% were in the top 10% of their HS Class. SAT's ? Middle 50th percentile* •Verbal 590-720 •Math 610-730 *50% of the class achieved SAT scores within the range between the 25th and 75th percentile Almost all are varsity level athletes & have as many honors as you. In other words??? The best of the best from all 50 states. As for AFROTC? and your major? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerospace_engineering#Aerospace_engineering_degrees http://afrotc.com/

It would be a good idea to compose a letter to your state senator and to your congressional representative. Don't make it as long as your post. Just hit the highlights and most importantly your grades and extra cirriculars. It certainly sounds like you have all your bases covered in terms of qualifying for admisson. Then you can mail them to the local offices of your representatives. It would be a good idea to copy them to your city commissioner so that he's aware of your actions. And good luck!
