How do I become a English Language teacher?

  • I want to become a English language teacher Taiwan. (in a school) How do I become this? I specifiically want to teach in taiwan and don't want to travel all around the world teaching the gnlish language. How do I do this?     First qualifications. You'll need a degree and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work abroad teaching English. The degree can be in almost any subject as it is usually required for the visa only so you will find teachers with a degree in Engineering or Sociology. Having said this, to help get the job it's obviously better to be English or language related, for example a degree in English literature. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com). Another poster claims a TEFL is needed to teach English in Taiwan. This is incorrect. At present, a four-year university degree in anything is sufficient as long as it was not gained through distance learning. And you'll need a passport from what Taiwan deems an English-speaking country (e.g., the United States, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Australia). It would also be a good idea to practice more at writing standard English. Throughout the world, people who hire English teachers definitely prefer those who are careful not to make mistakes like "teaching the gnlish language" and "im not yet graduated form highscool."
