Can you get the Hydra-Matic Six-Speed Automatic Transmission on the 5.3L?

I own a 1998 Buick Century With only 32k miles on it SHOULD I GET A TRANSMISSION FLUSH?

  • Please READ THIS FIRST ABOUT MY CAR SITUATION: Thanks in advance guys So I'm thinking of getting a flush and I have been reading many different arguments on the matter some people say that it's good whilst others say it can actually kill your transmissions. I have a 98 century in decent shape with only 32k but it SAT AROUND a lot and only had 20k miles when I bought it a year ago. It's been a good car since then for the most part but, now I'm wondering about this transmissions. So my Mom recently got her century flushed from a standard xyz mechanic but the car had like 80k on it --- at about 85k it needed a new a transmission rebuild. Scary stuff. I think that those mechanics actually ****** it up. That said this other guy that I'm thinking of taking it too supposedly from my father and those that I have talked to says that he flushes them the old fashioned way without the machines for 150.00. I don't know what that means is there any merit to that? That also said while getting a lube oil and filter they told me the transmission fluid looked dirty and I should get a flush ASAP. I looked at the fluid and HAD A MECHANIC look at the fluid and the FLUID CURRENTLY LOOKS LIKE NEW IN THE TRANSMISSION. Does dirty fluid mean you should get a flush whilst mine is clean so it means I shouldn't get a flush? It seems there's a lot of controversy over this flush because this whole thing is one big ******* business so some people are spreading a lot of disinformation (it appears) so it breaks or doesn't break. I just wish I knew the truth. It's so hard to find good information these days with anything thanks to lies, greed, and shady businesses. You never know who to trust. In any case what do you think?

  • Answer:

You dont really want to flush it, what you want to do is drop the tranny pan and change out the filter. Just put fresh fluid in for what you lost by dropping the pan. In other words, you aint "flushing" it, you are just changing out the filter and replacing the lost fluid and crud from the bottom of the pan.

With the lower miles you have and you say the fluid looks clean, it probably isn't necessary to have the fluid changed. If it has a burned oil smell to it, then I'd say change it. A sealed transmission which doesn't have combustion inside it to contaminate the oil, doesn't have any way for the oil to get "dirty". It can become contaminated with overheating, moisture, (condensation) etc. Your mom's car probably would have had the same problem either way. Your car will run the same whether you "flush" it or not. At this point don't waste your money. Also, some will disagree with me but having been in the situation of driving a vehicle 203,000 miles without doing that very thing just to see how the tranny would perform and how long, I never had to do anything to it. In fact, with the engine oil changed as recommended, it never had anything except belts, hoses, spark plugs and ignition wires done to it. With all that said, do what your gut tells you to do. Not everybody will have the same results with the tests I performed. Good Luck.

Stick with the filter & fluid change. http://vincentciulla.suite101.com/do-you-need-to-flush-your-transmission-a786 Here's just one site that helps to explain the flushing process and why it's not good. I've never flushed any transmission in all of my years and any of my cars. You never seem to hear about troubles after a filter & fluid change unless there was a pre-existing problem before the change.
