What is the difference between a jailbroken and "unlocked" iphone 4?

  • I have a jailbroken at&t iphone 4 im trying to cut service with at&t and wanted to know if i could use my phone with cricket wireless but im confused about the term "unlocked" or if theres a diferrence between jailbroken and unlocked phonw?!!

    Jailbroken is similar to having root on an Android device ie: the ability to run third party unofficial apps and the ability to pretty much delete anything on your phone. Unlocked means that the phone is no longer tied to a single provider. If you're off contract with ATT I have always found them to be very receptive to providing the subsidy unlock code when asked, you will need this prior to being able to use your jailbroken phone on another carrier.

in some ways, they're synonymous with each other, and in other ways, they're not the same. unlocked just means that you can use the iphone with any provider that uses the sim card. jailbreak is usually associated with illegal activity, such as playing pirated games. but jailbreaking can also mean unlocking.

To put it into simple terms: Jailbroken is when you hack your Iphone to get free apps and games. Unlocked is when you root your phone so that you install ROMS and IMGS to modify your phone. Sometimes when you unlock your phone you can put mods on your phone to make things run faster. I wouldnt recommend unlocking your phone. It is not recommended, and can avoid warranty on your phone. You also have a chance of bricking your phone which permenantly freezes your phone, and glitches up the software. Personally I think its stupid. The term unlock means "unlocking the bootloader, which is typically locked when stock.
