How would New York be for a family holiday?

How much money should I bring for a two week holiday in New York City over Christmas?

  • I am going with my partner and our flights and accommodation is fully paid for. We have a self catering apartment, are hoping to cook at least 50% of our dinners and the vast majority of our breakfasts and maybe lunch out most of the time. We'll be doing some of the typical tourist attractions but will definitely have a preference for the low cost/free/off the beaten track attractions such as just visiting certain areas.Don't mind eating fairly cheapish but still want to have a good time. Can yo first of all suggest some great (cheap) things to do in the city? and secondly, around how much should we bring each? I was thinking around £1,000 spending money for the whole thing? Is that enough? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

£1000 is enough, i took £400 for a week as a student paying for all food and clothes and stuff, but we had already bought stuff such as Broadway, nba games, liberty island, museums. Use the public transport, it is very good. Go shopping as much as possible Walk around to see the sites Grand central station is good to see The only off the beaten track attraction we went to was the tenement museaum, but i wouldn't recommend going. Eat at traditional american places instead of Mcdonalds, Katz diner was amazing and you have to get the Pastrami sandwitch, although a little pricy its so worth it.http://katzsdelicatessen.com/media//Sandwich9web.jpg

One billion dollars! Or however much you can afford to spend.

My friend, since you're going to be in town for two weeks, you only need about $1,400 for those two weeks. That translate to $700 a week or $100 a day. If you're going to be doing some shopping while in town, I would recommend setting aside an additional $500 to $1,000 to covered any shopping expenses while in New York City. It should be noted that as of April 1st, all clothing and footwear purchase under $110 is exempt from state and city sales taxes. In other word, you don't have to pay any city or state sales tax when purchasing clothes and shoes under $110. I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck Native New Yorker
