What to wear to my jazz song performance?

I'm going to sing a pop/dance song at a talent show where everyone's singing Classical/Jazz music? Help!?

  • I'm 15 and a singer. I'm going to be entering a talent contest with people as young as 13 but as old as 21. But last time i entered, 2 years ago, they were all in there 20s. Everyone sang either a slow, classical song, broadway, country or jazz song. There were also a couple pianists and interpretive dancers. But I'm doing something really daring and going against the trend and singing a upbeat, pop dance song. It's "Yeah 3x" by Chris Brown. I'm also going to edit some lyrics. I passed the song (by my singing teacher), and I love this song, BUT I'm scared about the risk I'm taking and how people will react. They'll either clap/dance and enjoy it OR they will be uptight and think I'm an unprofessional, immature teenager. At Stake: $300 for first place, $200 second place, $100 3rd place. Top 3 get to move on to State competition. Everyone in city knows you competed. I know I have natural and accuracy ability. This song could really get me some showmanship and audience appeal points because I can't help but "party" along with this song. Overall performance, I hope so. I might also have an advantage because chances are I'll be one of the last ones up, it'll be dark, and I'll get to have the golden lights on me. That could enhance the song. But a disadvantage could be that I live in Kentucky (the country music state) and the judges are adults. I'm confused help.

  • Answer:

If that's the song you sound best at when singing, go for it. The passion comes out greatest when you're singing a song you love. In my honest opinion, though, I think it's definitely the wrong song choice. It doesn't show off how powerful your voice can be. You don't need to be Freddie Mercury, but try singing a slower or just groovier song, like a ballad. Long, powerful notes and/or stronger melodies appeal more to the audience.

It will be different because every one will expect jazz and country but its like the odd one stands out and that's what will be good for more votes no one wants to see the same act pretty much
