How can I keep bears away from my tent?

Can I use foil duct tape to help keep sun out of my tent?

  • I feel silly asking this, but I've been reading around online and found that some people like to use emergency thermal blankets (Mylar) on the outside of their tents to keep cool and sleep longer in the morning. But I've read that there are pitfalls to that- the wind can rip off the blankets, and they are very loud in the wind (like crinkly potato chip bags). Also, it's hard to adhere because duct tape doesn't stick to it very well (or so I read). So would it be completely ridiculous to cover my tent in foil duct tape? I'm planning on taking it off and throwing it away before I pack my tent back up. Normally I can camp under shade, but I'm going to a music festival and theres no garuntee that I'll find a spot with trees. Thanks in advance for your insight :)

  • Answer:

Mylar would work just fine those emergency space blankets duck tapped down would work as well. The only problem I see is the tape degrading from moisture and making a mess of the tent material

Yes, you would be completely ridiculous. Buy a tarp and stake it down over your tent.

Do yourself a favor and DON'T use duct tape. What a sticky mess , and it could damage the tent fabric. If you use the crinkly "emergency" type space blankets, just twist each corner, tie parachute cord tightly around it and tie it off to the tent pegs or frame to keep it from blowing away. Better yet, look for the heavier reflective space blankets with plastic or nylon on one side, metallic on the other and sturdy grommets around the edge to tie it down with. I've used one of those with good success when camping in places where I wanted some shade in the early morning.

Why don't you just bring some poles and rope and stake up a tarp over the tent? Or don't plan on sleeping late? Or forget the tent and string up a tarp to sleep under? That way you get some breeze.

The emergency mylar ones ar pretty crinkly, nut i've been using one that's more like a normal tarp, and only has the reflective surface on one side. Its not as small, but its no bigger than a tent footprint tarp would be anyways. But yyeah, it solves the two other problems: no crinkly sound, and because it has normal tarp style grommets I can just use a little bit of extra paracord to tie it in any way I want to to help the shading. I always find that leaving a few inches between the "sun tarp" and the tent walls themselves helps with ventilation and cooling- even with the rainfly on.
