How do I make simple YouTube videos (like the music videos that only has lyrics on the screen)?

I'm doing a project for one of my online class and I'm thinking about making a video. I want to add music, images, animated transitions, and perhaps subtitles to go along with my image. What type of program can I use to make this? I've tried Windows Live Movie Maker, but it tells me my video is not compatible with it when I try to upload the video? That video was done with high end video processing software, after effects and maybe other programs. If a video you had your computer will not work with that piece of crap WMM, it is probably in the wrong file format, a video converter program can solve that problem. But WMM can not make a video like that
