What's the process of becoming a pilot?

Becoming a Pilot in military?

  • I'm a senior in high school and would love to be a chopper pilot, or a fighter pilot in the military when I get older. I know a bit about how to become one but have a few questions that I would like some help with. First, a few small questions. 1- Which would be better, doing an ROTC program in college, or going to Officer Candidate School? 2- Which branch has the most jobs? 3- What's the process to becoming a pilot after basic training? Now my big concern.... I have 20/30 vision in one eye, and 20/40 in the other, it's corrected to 20/20 with glasses and can correct it to 20/20 with either lasik, or PRK eye surgery. 4- What would I have to do to qualify? In a little confused when the qualifications say "20/20 vision or corrected to 20/20." 5- If I can't go out for some pilot jobs, are there others I qualify for. 6- Are there different qualifications for fighter pilots and Helicopter Pilots? Thanks for the help with all of these questions.

If you want to fly, there's no better branch than Air force. I would recommend doing AFROTC, it lets you have a normal college students life while training to become an officer. I believe that the Army has more jobs, but like I said, if you want to be a pilot stick with the Air Force. As for your vision, i'm almost positive you will be fine. I am qualified as a potential pilot, navigator, and RPA pilot and I think i'm like 20/30. I do believe there are different requirements for helicopter and fighter pilots, for example there is a max height for fighter pilots otherwise you're head would be taken off if you tried to eject.

Regardless of which route you take, like the first poster said, it is extremely important to finish in the top of your class. The job market is extremely competitive, so take your training as your golden opportunity to come out on top.

1. For fighter pilots, you really need to look at the AF academy and graduate near the top of your class. The AF is cutting back and assigning pilots to UAV controllers. ROTC is less likely and OCS to become a fighter pilot is a one in a million chance. 1a. For helicopter pilot in the Army, your best bet is to enlist and go into the Warrant Officer Program. 2nd best is to go Army Academy and graduate near the top of your class to get a choice of Aviation. Slightly less likely is ROTC and graduate near the top of your class. OCS is a one in 100,000 chance. 2. The Army by far. 3. If you do basic training, the way to become a pilot would be to apply for the Warrant Officer program, what you really want to do is contact a recruiter and tell him your are interested in becoming a Warrant Officer and he can give you the current details. 4. Vision: Correctable to 20/20 means if you wear glasses it is ok. All services now allow eye surgery to make your vision better. Going in with glasses may meet the minimum requirements, but you will be less competitive. 5. There are a lot of jobs other than being a pilot. 6. Qualifications for the Army and Air Force are very different.

Moose, The Marine Corps PLC Program is great!! Candidates go to six weeks after their freshman and junior years. Your TIS (Time in Service) starts when you sign and you will be paid over four when you go to the Basic School(TBS) and that a big deal. Marine Corps Officers pick their jobs at TBS except Aviation and Law. You get your commission at your graduation. No uniforms just stay in shape, make the grades and stay out of trouble.Contact your Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer (OSO) soon. Good luck. You may eligible for the Marine Corps Aviation or Law Option so check it out. http://officer.marines.com/marine/making_marine_officers
