This will all depends on the subwoofer you have and amp. Most subwoofer now have their own cross over built in. Most receivers now also provide you a pre out to connect a subwoofer. Hope this will help you out.

No. Crossover cables are for computer networks not analog audio. Your AV Receiver does 'bass management' and routes low frequency to a LFE or Subwoofer RCA output jack on the back. You just use an RCA cable to your self-powered sub.
