How do I put up my mosquito net?

If I put mosquito dunks in a bucket of water in my yard, will adult mosquitos drink the liquid and die?

  • I'm just curious because there are lots of issues with where I live and mosquitos... 1) I'm not too all far from swampland, 2) There is a lot of shrubbery, vines, little plants, trees etc. surrounding the home I rent, 3) Since I rent there's not a lot I can do about all that. What I'm wondering is, well,.... I see these products called Mosquito Dunks or what have you that are for putting in any standing water you may have (e.g. a lake etc) to disrupt mosquitoes life cycle while growing in water. What I'm wondering is, since I can't get at the source of the mosquitoes around my house (as i can't realistically get rid of all the shrubbery - not only would it be a huge job requiring power tools, but it's not my house) I was wondering whether I could put a bucket of water with some of the mosquito poison in it, and whether the adults would drink at it and die. It's just I have some tomatoes/peppers going in containers and I use a bucket to water them, and I noticed two mosquitoes hanging out by the water (which I left for only a day at a time in the bucket, so the tap water's chlorine can evaporate). Does anyone know whether: A) Mosquito dunks in a bucket of water will kill adults as well as larvae? and also, B) Is water treated w/ mosquito dunks unsafe to use to water plants that are intended for human consumption? I'm thinking that's probably unsafe, just wanted to ask an opinion. I'm also thinking of getting a larger container outside to let my irrigation water stand in to evaporate chlorine; does anyone have an opinion on whether putting Citronella oil in the water would dissuade mosquitoes and/or be safe on the plants? Sorry for the twenty questions! Appreciate any input you may care to offer! Have a great day, be safe, and be well, all y'all.

  • Answer:

The dunks are intended to kill mosquito larvae. They will not be effective on adult mosquitoes. There are sprays you can apply to the bushes and undergrowth to either kill or repel mosquitoes. Ask at your local home and garden store.
