Whats wrong with my lawn mower?

Petrol, battery or wired lawn mower, whats best?

  • We have a very old wired electric lawn mower, about 10 years old. If we used this when the grass was wet what would happen? I'm looking on buying on a new one, does anyone who knows about lawn mowers have any advice they can give. Thanks. :)

  • Answer:

An electric mower should always be connected through an RCD (Powerbreaker). Apart from the minor risk when cutting wet grass the greater risk is cutting through the power cord. RCDs are cheap lifesavers. Re a new mower. Nothing much beats a good rotary petrol mower. The latest versions run clean and if you use a fully synthetic oil and change it annually it will outlast your old mower. Honda powered are the best, but expensive. Briggs and Stratton are next. Buy one with a wide cut and plenty of power if your lawn is large.

I prefer a gasoline power mower. No cords to mess with and they really are not any worse from an environmental impact than the electric. Electric is most parts of the world is generated by burning coal. So really there is no "environmental" difference. I prefer gasoline because you do not have to deal with a cord while you are cutting. Several neighbors have cut their cords with their electric mowers while they are doing it and had to go buy replacements. As long as gasoline is in the tank, you are in good shape. I use electric tools as well, but they are localized for cutting branches or trimming bushes where a cord is usually not in the way.

A lot depends on the size and state of your lawn. I have grass - probably of the meadow variety, riddled with dandelions and |very little time. I therefore use a petrol strimmer to reduce it from knee height in Spring and maintain it with a Flymo. It will never look like a "lawn" but its tidy. However, if you have something half-decent you may want those lovely lines only created with a rotary mower - a hover mower doesn't give the same effect. As to power - anything with trailing cables is a nightmare to manage (always use a circuit breaker anyway) and I would choose petrol for my size garden. There are cordless rotary mowers about but really expensive. If you have a well-maintained, medium sized lawn a hand mower is as good as your enthusiasm.... You shouldn't cut wet grass with anything it doesn't cut neatly.

Gas will probably be the best -although not the 'greenest'. In spite of great advances in the battery powered mowers - they still don't have the power to cut a challenging lawn. A 'wired' mower always presents the problem of dealing with the 'wire'. Gas is easy, cheap, powerful and simple to maintain.

Bank on it

I use a manual mower. I don't like the smell of gasoline and worry about storing it in the garage. My yard is too big to drag an electric cord all over the place. I thought about a battery powered mower, but decided to use a push mower instead. I get more exercise, it is quieter, and it doesn't cost anything to power. The only problem is it doesn't do a very good job of cutting some of the lawn. Some of the grass is very slender and flexible and lies down very easily and the mower won't get it. With a power mower the rapidly spinning blades cause a suction and will pull the grass up to be cut. So I sometimes have to go around with a pair of grass shears and cut some of the grass by hand, which takes an extra 10 minutes or so.

Get a self-propelled petrol mower, they last virtually for ever if you look after them and every single time you cut the grass you will be so glad you choose petrol

Petrol. It will last longer and you don't have to plug it in so you can move around more.
