How long does it take to digest rice?

How long does it take to digest oil? 10 points best answer!?

  • Me and my fiance were wondering how fast we digest oil? Ie- if you eat deep fried chicken and fries, how long will it to for the oil in it to digest? Drinks digest faster but we were wondering if it's the same for oils? Also how long on average would it take for a drink to digest, lets say coke, and how long for foods? (I know all foods digest at different speeds so give me some examples!). 10 Points for the best informative ans! Thanks x

  • Answer:

The lower the amount of calories a food/drink contains the faster it will be absorbed into the blood stream, the more calories a food contains the longer it takes. Then there's whole foods VS processed foods; whole foods tend to be broken down in the gut more easily than processed foods, but depending on the food density and chemical makeup, some foods are digested faster than others. See the glycemic index. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycemic_index Absorption of oils (aka fats or lipids) will take longer to be absorbed than all other foods types as they contain the most calories per gram, around 9 cals per gram compared to carbohydrates and proteins which contain about 4 calories per gram. (Alcohol contains around 7 calories per gram). Fats and foods that are high in natural fats like, virgin olive oil and coconut oil and oily fish are classed as HDL fats, these help keep your arteries clean and running smoothly. Trans fats, hydrogenated fats, and other processed fats fall into the LDL fats category; these types of fats take the longest to be broken down in the body and also can clog the arteries leading to all kinds of health problems. (think of HDL fats as 'happy' fats and LDL fats as 'lethal' fats). http://health.howstuffworks.com/diseases-conditions/cardiovascular/cholesterol/difference-between-ldl-and-hdl-cholesterol.htm When it comes to digestion everyone will be different, and all depending on what you eat or course. A light meal may be fully digested in as little as an hour and a large meal, like a Sunday roast may take several hours to be digested! Hypothetically if you ate a fried chicken meal containing around 1000 calories or so, and that meal comprised of around 45% fat mostly from processed fats, then that's 450 calories of fat, then assuming that you burn off around 2000 calories per day, which is (2000/24(hrs in the day) thats 83.3 calories per hour)(83.3/450 = 5.4)(damn I hate math lol. 0.4 of an hour is 24 minutes)(so to burn off just the 450 cals (or 50g) of fat in the meal would take in the region of 5 hrs and 24 minutes, then you will also have to factor in the rest of the meal, so I would hazard a guess it would be maybe 8+ hours to completely digest the 1000 calorie fried chicken meal, and that would then stay in your digestive system for a further 8-10 hours+ until you use the bathroom. Coke is easy... it's high in processed sugar and is almost instantly digested into the blood stream.
