What does a cold sore feel like and what's the best treatment?

Antibiotics not working Pre Root Canal Treatment - HELP!?

  • I am awaiting treatment for a root canal on a tooth. I have been waiting since February and have been in pain since. Not Nerve pain but another kind of pain! I have had two lots of Amoxoxillin which helped the pain but when i stopped taking it the pain returned. I Finally had to go back to the dentist last week because i could not cope with the pain any longer! She opened the tooth and took my nerves out but could not proceed anymore because of the pain and i presume infection still being present in my tissue? The anasthetic didnt numb me properly because of the infection so screamed my way through her removing my nerves lol! She sent me on my way to come back at a later date with a script for antibiotics - only to take if i needed them. Well its been nearly a week and over the weekend i had to get the antibiotics because the pain is worse than ever again. Everytime i eat it seems to irritate it more especially if its hot food/liquid. I am living on ibuprofen but am worried as the pain seems to be spreading up my face level with my nose. I am worried as i feel like i am never going to get rid of this pain. Does anybody know whats going to happen - what i should do if these antibiotics dont work? Should i wait until i have finished them? Please help - too much pain :(

  • Answer:

Sounds like a big infection. You need a stronger antibiotics, If that infection is that bad then Clindamycin 300mg and Metronidazole 500mg together. This will cover a much broader spec of bugs. When your dentist freezes you he/she should do regular freezing and then do a PDL injection, and also if possible anesthetic directly in the tooth. If the tooth has never been opened up, the alternative is to tough it out and get the tooth open and it will probably drain (releases pressure and thus pain), but I only do this if my patient insists as I hate my patients to suffer :( PS. for pain management, you could try Percocet, but only for short term.
