Has anybody been to Hungary?

Why did they speak Croatian in Horstein, Hungary (now in Burgenland, Austria) and do they still speak it?

  • My Oma (grandmother) was born in Hornstein, Hungary in 1900 but her language and the community language was Croatian. I am just interested in the history of this. The people who lived there were known as something like the 'water Croatians'. Anybody out there who can explain or give me some background and/or history? Your answers will be warmly welcomed.

  • Answer:

Well, I don't know about Horstrein exactly but after the Turkish occupation, the Hungarian population was left very low so Hungary supported immigrants. At the peak of this, the immigrant population was almost 50% of the country's whole population. Though Croatians didn't generally emmigrate to that area, but Hornstein could be an exception of this, though this is only a guess.
