How long would it take to respectively learn to speak Greek? Whats the best way to learn?
-
I am a native speaker of English and I have never had one lesson in trying to speak another language. I can imagine it is a very difficult process to learn a new language as an adult, but I do want to become fluent in Greek before I die (whenever that may be). I once had a college professor who was fluent in German say that you know your fluent in a language when you start thinking in that language. So how long would it take (estimate obviously there are several factors that would make the time span differ among people) to learn Greek to the point of fluency if you put your mind to it? Also what would be the best way to learn? Classes? Private lessons? A computer program like rosetta stone? Or some combination of the sort? Any other tips or advice on learning Greek? Thanks!

Answer:
Modern Greek is a Category II Language, so according to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State it will take at least 1100 hours to become fluent. Good materials to learn Modern Greek : http://www.omniglot.com/books/language/greek.htm (I quite like the "Colloquial" series) Free online Greek language courses : - http://www.omniglot.com/links/courses.htm#Greek - http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/greek/ (introduction) - http://learn101.org/greek.php - http://www.fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Greek - http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Modern_Greek More free online resources : http://www.omniglot.com/links/greek.htm#dictionaries

It depends. Learning a new language is different for everyone depending on there abilities. If you do well in learning new languages then it would take a considerably less amount of time to learn. But nothing is as easy as it sounds, you will need a lot of perseverance and time put into it. I recommend searching on Google for a 'Language tutorial' and make sure that it looks a professional site that is well managed! Hope that helps you.
