It's actually a very simple effect to create, just think about it! Create a blank image of a solid color that's the size you want the finished image to be, then add layers with one of the smaller images positioned on each layer. By using multiple layers you can adjust things relative to each other more quickly, and make layers you don't need at any time invisible. When all your images are in place you then fake the markers next to each image on it's corresponding layer. You can do this is Photoshop (CS or Elements), GiMP (free), PaintShopPro, or any other image manipulation software that supports layers.
