What is the difference between full metal alchemist and fullmetal alchemist brotherhood?

    Full metal alchemist is kinda a different version of brotherhood Full metal alchemist follows only a bit of the story line near the beginning of the series while Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood follows the manga. Although I think the original fma series has a bit more of a dark atmosphere from what I seen, either way their both good in their own way but if you prefer the real deal I would go for Fma brotherhood :D Hope this helps any^^

Fullmetal Alchemist (the original 2003 anime) follows the original manga story-line to a point and then carries on its own plot-line with different characters, settings, and overall plot (the movie, Conqueror of Shamballa). Brotherhood is a direct, faithful adaptation of the original manga series and is a completely different plot than the original 2003 anime. I think you should watch the 2003 anime first and see if you actually like (you will, even non-anime fans love the 2003 series), and if you do, then watch Brotherhood. The 2003 series has more emphasis on the psychological and theological views expressed in the series, while Brotherhood has a more complex, in-depth plot with more fleshed-out characters. Whatever is your cup o' tea.

The original Fullmetal alchemist anime at a certain point diverges from the manga story. This anime caught up to where the manga was at in terms of story so they had to make up their own story. Brotherhood follows the manga stroyline all the way through. There actually are major differences between the two once they diverge. For example the main antagonists are completely different characters and the explanation of what a homunculus is are very different. I thought brotherhood was much better.

Full metal Alchemist was made before the manga was finished so once it reaches a certain point the creators started making up their own story. It's a good anime but I didn't like the way it ended and in my opinion it wasn't as good as Brotherhood. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was made to closely follow the manga. It's a lot better in my opinion because it goes the way the author intended it to. The characters have better development and depth and I believe the storyline is much better. If you're trying to decide which one to watch I'd definitely recommend Brotherhood.
