Will copies of birth certificates suffice to travel by airplane without state issued ID's?

Can I order copies of birth certificates for great aunts and uncles (all deceased)?

  • And, if so, how does the state that I'd be ordering from know that these people are deceased since some of them died in other states? Most of them were born early in the 1900s, so it's logical to assume that they are dead. But given the concerns over personal privacy, how do the states decide which birth certificates are okay to send?

    1. Depends on the state. Go to the state vital statistics office web site. There will be instructions on obtaining copies of birth certificates. 2. Some states require proof/verification of who you are others do not. 3. If this is for genealogy sourcing, you do not need copies of the certificate. You only need the information on the birth record and specific information on where you got the information so others could review it

the rules for EACH STATE are different, and specific. Overall... they DON'T make any attempt to define if the person is or isn't dead. They are restricted for an arbitrary number of years. If the person is dead, that does not change. So..there is no reason or need to determine when the person died (IF they died). Second... those same state rules define WHO can have authority to order birth records. Generally...they are limited to immediate family or desc. Great niece is not direct. But? I repeat.. CHECK THE STATE WEBSITE for particulars.
