Where can I get a title for my camper?

I bought a camper without the title, how do I get a title?

  • I have a bill of sale, but the guy couldn"t find the title

  • Answer:

You don't. The title must be furnished to you by the owner. The guy can get a duplicate for you from his DMV. Are you sure the camper is his to sell? Are you sure the camper isn't stolen? Are you sure the camper doesn't have a lien on it? People who give someone money for a vehicle without getting a valid title for it are very foolish. A bill of sale means absolutely nothing. It is worthless without a title,.

He will need to fill out a form to get a duplicate title from the DMV. Then you need to transfer the title to your name.

I'm guessing that a bill of sale is a receipt, and a title is the registration document? Slightly different terminology in the UK. Anyhow, you *really* shouldn't buy the vehicle without the registration document - for all you know, it could easily have been stolen and then just sold you, it could have money owing on it that you'll now have to pay, it could be a cut and shut (where two cars that were involved in an accident are welded together to make one OK-looking car, but still extremely unsafe). In the future, when buying a car, give it a proper inspection (or take along a friend who knows about cars). Check all over for signs of rust, check the engine for signs of leakages (check the oil level, the power steering fluid level, brake fluid level, water level, check the oil is clean, etc. etc. etc.). Check the tyres are in good condition (treads at least 1.6mm in the UK, not sure in the US). Then take the registration certificate (I'm guessing that's the title), and check the numberplate to see if it's the right one. Then find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) - it'll probably be under the bonnet (hood) somewhere, and also embossed under the vehicle. Check it's the same as on the registration certificate. Then you should do a check online - here's a website that works in the US: http://www.carfax.com/entry.cfx It'll cost a little but it's worth it, could save you hundreds in the long run. Check the previous MOT certificates and make sure the mileages tally up (I don't even know if you have MOT tests in America, they're annual roadworthiness checks.) Then, if you're happy, buy it :)

Have the seller apply for a duplicate title. But since he's got your money, don't expect him to get off his duff and do anything. You may have to sue if he doesn't. Check with the DMV to see if they can title the camper in your name on the BOS only. In the future, never buy any vehicle without a clear title in hand no matter how desperate you want that vehicle. Lack of a title could indicate that the seller doesn't own the vehicle.

He needs ot get a copy and then sign it over to you, fairly simple. Never buy antyhing without title.
