What is Priestley's social message in 'an inspector calls?

Why is the play an inspector calls still popular even though it was written in the 1940s?

  • Is it's message still the same and are they still current?

  • Answer:

When a play was written has nothing to do with whether or not it's still popular nowadays. Shakespeare wrote his hundreds of years ago, and they still pull in the crowds! The nature of people doesn't really change, even though circumstances might. I've thoroughly enjoyed plays written 600 years ago, 300 years ago, 100 years ago and so on. I also enjoy plays written in the 20s, 30s, right through to ones just coming to the stage for the first time now. Basically, human beings haven't changed that much!

Sophocles and Euripides wrote their plays thousands of years ago. They are still performed because their messages are timeless.
