Internet speed increase with CAT6 cable?

  • I'm looking to increase the speed of my internet connection and I found out that since I am using old CAT5 cables, my speed may be lacking. Here is the current structure of my network. There is a Windstream modem connected to an ASUS RT-N56U wireless router via a CAT5 cable. The router does support gigabit ethernet. I have a laptop which connects wirelessly to the network and a desktop (with a gigabit LAN port) which connects via a CAT5 cable to the router. I have ordered a couple of CAT6 cables to reach higher speeds. I know the internet connection going to the desktop should improve using a CAT6 cable. However, will my network speed as a whole (wired and wireless) increase if I replace the existing CAT5 cable running from the modem to the router with the new CAT6 cable?

    No, no, no. That's not how it works. Consider this analogy. You are like an owner of a car that has top speed of 50 miles/hr no matter where you drive. Now you want to build a superhighway where cars can go as fast as 100 miles/hr. That won't make your car go faster even a bit. If you want your car to be faster, change it's engine. Now going back your internet connection, the only way to increase your internet speed is by paying for a better service. Cat5 cable can carry data as fast as 100 megabits/sec while Cat6 can carry data as fast as 1 gigabit/sec or 1,024 megabits/sec. Is the internet you are paying for that fast? I'd bet it's not even 1/4 of what a Cat5 can provide. In short, you'll only be wasting money on a Cat6 cable. The only time you will need a Cat 6 cable is when you have computers that have a gigabit ethernet port and you want to transfer data between computers connected to the same router or directly connected.

No, it won't make any difference. Cat5 cable is fine for 100Mbps ethernet or relatively short runs of gigabit ethernet. Cat5e is fine at gigabit. Either speed is going to be faster than your Internet connection so you will not be addressing the real bottleneck.

No. CAT6 will make very little to no difference in your setup, especially since your router doesn't even support gigabit ethernet. CAT6 would be more noticeable if you added a gigabit switch and transferred large files, but that's more the gigabit switch than the CAT6, and only on wired devices. The CAT6 does help a bit though. Small files and internet browsing won't get any faster. It also won't affect any wireless speeds at all.

NOTE**** i must agree with the 2 posts here its your connection thats the problem your dsl line is only 1.5 mbps if u could boost to 20 -40 mbps that would be thru your cable provider for internet ..thats what u need to get faster speeds
