Where do I start to be a RN?

Where do I start if I want to become an RN?

  • I am thinking in going to either the community college here or University of Phoenix which one would be better? I want to get an associates degree and maybe move up to the bachelor's degree but does it make a difference? is it better? Will it increase my chances on getting hired? I honestly need some advice I dont know where to start :( I would appreciate any advice. How many years does it take to get the associates in a community college? and how many in University of Phoenix? How many years to get a bachelor's degree in a community college? and how many in University of Phoenix? Thank u in advance.

  • Answer:

Getting a BSN at a regular university or college would be your best bet and can be done in 4 years. To get just an Associates at a community college you would need: At least 1 year of prerequisites to apply to the nursing program. There may be a waiting list of 2 years after the prerequisites. Then, you would do the 2 years of the nursing program. To transfer to get a BSN you may need to do more prerequisites. Then, another 2 years. Just finding a good 4 year nursing program for the BSN is the wisest and will give you a better chance for employment. It will also allow you to do an externship in a specialty. University of Phoenix is for those who watch too much TV and believe everything they see on TV.

A community college is a better choice. You might want to google "University of Phoenix scam" and read some of the material you find. The University of Phoenix is a for-profit school. For-profit schools make money off their students. Public schools and private, nonprofit schools, on the other hand, actually spend more money educating their students than they take in as tuition. You will get a better education for less money at a community college. After you complete your associate degree in nursing, you can transfer to a public four-year college and complete a BSN. It will probably take about five years in either case.

A community college is a good start, but you'll want to go for your BSN eventually. I don't trust the University of Phoenix personally. They are too broad. I would look at the different community colleges and compare their NCLEX passing rates and how well their graduates find jobs. I would also look at any universities in your state that may partner with them to do a bridge program to get your BSN after you graduate. As for getting an associate degree, it takes usually 2 to 3 years depending on if you get accepted or if you get wait-listed.
