What is the independent and dependent variables?

  • okay, so i don't understand exactly what that means my experiment is using magnets with plants. i have a sheet of magnetic paper under one set of plants and and the other set has nothing. they are both in the same place and receive the same amount of sunlight and water so what is the independent and dependent variables? thanks

You want to see if a plant grows better in the dark or in the light. You MUST have the same type of plants to make the experiment accurate, which would be the dependent variable. You have to have different types of light though. One plant will be in the dark and the other will be in the light. That would be the dependent variable. So an independent variable is the the part of the experiment that doesnt change. the dependent variable is the part of the experiment that does change.
