Questions about college..?
-
I'm a junior in high school right now, and I really need to buckle down and start thinking about my future and more importantly, college. I don't know what I want to study, I don't even know where I want to go or what I want to be. Basically I have questions concerning college. You could even just tell me your college experience. 1. Did you stay home or go away for college? Why? 2. Did you know what you wanted to study when you applied to college? 3. What classes are you taking? Majors/minors? 4. How difficult is it? 5. Any advice? Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate this. Talk of the future really freaks me out and I don't want to be scared of what's to come.

I'll just quickly answer your questions. If you really wanted my insight on college, that should've been your question. But anyways: 1. I dormed my freshman year. Then got an off-campus apartment because it was cheaper. And I already knew how to cook and clean myself, so I managed to do fine. 2. I already knew what kind of area I wanted to get into. I mean I liked computers and fixing them, and I just applied for the Electrical Engineering department of my school. But you don't really figure out if you like it or not until you actually get into the classes and take them. My advice: if possible list the majors and jobs that you are interested in. And find someone who knows about those majors (preferably someone in the field, or someone who is at least a 3rd year+ who knows what the classes are like) 3. Engineering courses, electrical engineering 4. Its a lot of work and thinking. But thats expected for engineers (thinking about problems, finding solutions). It's relative to whether you want to think and apply the knowledge you learned, or use the knowledge to do some grind work (like an accountant or something). 5. I gave you advice about majors in question 2. Its natural to be nervous about higher education. It is drastically different from high school. But I like college better than high school. I'm an above average intelligence person, so I enjoy being around people who are fairly smart and intelligent. Dorm life makes it easier to make friends. As long as you pick a major you are truly interested in, you'll do fine in college. Difficulty depends on how well do you want to do. Best thing to really do is find friends/relatives who have been to college (more recent is better) and get their perspective. Chances are their experiences won't be the same ones you'll have, but thats pretty much how it is for everyone.

1. I went away. Why? A lot of reasons. The financial aid package was by far the best I'd received and I adored the campus. The school had the program I wanted, excellent study abroad options, and was well ranked. I couldn't say no to all of that! 2. I knew what I didn't want to major in before I knew what I did want to major in. I ended up taking an introductory international studies class my freshman year and I was hooked. 3. I majored in international studies and minored in Spanish. The major was very broad, so I took classes in everything from economics (three semesters), to anthropology, to history, to medieval Spanish literature. 4. Academically, it was a mixed bag. Those three semesters of economics kicked my butt, and my capstone project was utterly insane. It wasn't anything I couldn't handle, just a lot of work. Adjusting to living on my own was probably the hardest part of my entire college experience. I was five hours away from home and in the middle of nowhere, so there was no way I could get back unless I planned something way in advance. The first year was very rough emotionally. 5. If you can get through the first year, particularly the first semester, you can get through college. It doesn't matter if you're living right next to campus or living across the country. That first year is full of ups and downs. You will get homesick, you will question your sanity, and you will feel low sometimes. You'll also become a lot more independent, you'll meet a ton of cool new people, and, if all goes well, you'll be excited to return after your first summer back.
When I was in high school I wasn't thinking about college either and when I was a senior I started slacking. My only goal was to graduate high school and going to a four-year college wasn't on my mind because I knew that I had to start at a community college first. (Plus I didn't do well on the SAT). So I'm glad that you're realizing NOW that you need to get serious, unlike me haha. But anyway, when I was at community college I wanted to transfer to UCLA or UCSD but got scared to go away so I stayed home. I didn't know what I wanted to go into, and kept changing my mind before I finally settled on English right before I transferred and I felt fine in the major because I liked to write stories and all that. Some of the classes were boring, though. Because I took some other classes outside of my major I decided to get a certificate in that subject, so now I'm an English major getting a certificate in Ethnic Studies. My advice to you is if you're interested in any career, like being a psychologist, then take some psychology courses to see if you really like the subject. That's how I found out what I did not want to go into. (You're gonna have to take general education classes anyway, which can be anything, well, almost). You don't have to know what you want to do for a career or what you want to major in right when you get to college. Also, build a relationship with your academic advisor, as this is going to be the person who is going to make sure you're on track to graduate and that you're passing the classes you're in. Your advisor can also help you (or refer you) to a career counselor if you need help with finding a job or something. This is what my advisor did for me. Good luck!
I'm in college right now. 1) I am living in my home (with my wife and kids). I think it would make me a d-bag to leave my family to go to school! 2) Yes, but it changed as I learned more about schooling and the law. I originally wanted to go into acupuncture, but found out that only certain states license for it, so I decided to go after osteopathic medicine. 3) I am a biology major with a minor in chemistry. At this point I have taken a ton of classes, too many to list. I have found that math has been the subject that has slowed me down the most. 4) All of my classes at my community college were easy. Some of the online ones were jokes. Calculus A was still hard, but I took it as a summer class, while working full time, with a new born baby at home, so I got a B. At university, the classes are much harder, especially the math classes. 5) Learn all you can before you get there. If you can start at a community college, do it, because it is cheaper and easier. Don't let yourself get behind on your homework. Do as good as you can on your core subjects in high school (math, english, science). When you get to college, use the internet to look up teachers before you register for their classes (like ratemyprofesser.com). Remember that just because you pay more for a school doesn't mean you will get a better education. Your GPA only matter while you are in school. If you are going for a co-op, internship, or your first job, you might be asked about your GPA, but past that, no one cares. Going to college, you can work on your basics, without declaring a major. Most programs have similar requirements for basic classes.
