How long does it take to become an elementary school teacher?

I'm currently a sophmore majoring in nursing. I'm transferring to another college majoring in elementary education. I decided that that was something I actually wanted to do. I want to be an elementary school teacher, instead of a nurse. How long does it take to become a teacher?

Answer:
In my state (California) it takes 5 years. However since you are a sophomore it should only take you 3 more.

4 years...a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and then you have to take state exams in addition to that and pay for a certificate. Are you sure you want to go into education? Right now its an excellent career to be out of. Education is experiencing some serious upheaval. It is not like it was when you were in elementary school.
