Nervous about my first day on a the first job?

How should I act on the first day of my first job/summer job?

  • So I just got my first job ever and i'm really nervous. Its a local restaurant. I'm going to start out only on Saturdays from 4:00-8:00 and then over the summer when I'm out of school I'll hopefully be working more. I think for starting I'll be like helping out around the restaurant although i'm not really sure what i'll have to do...i'm really nervous that ill be awkwardly sitting around a lot and there will be nothing for me to do. I have no experience with working at all like i don't even know how to use a cash register! also i can't drive yet so my mom will be picking me up, when my shift ends at 8:00, do I just leave? like i honestly have no idea how to act!! this is a really weird question and all but i am so nervous give me adivce!!!

Alright, I think it's pretty safe to say I have some good advice on this. Have you had training yet? If not, that's pretty odd. I am pretty sure they will train you everything you need to know for your job though, so no worries. It's totally normal to be really nervous on your first day, but you have to have confidence. You definitely want to show up to work early(like 15 minutes or so) and just be smiley and friendly. Definitely, absolutely get acquainted with the people that work there, they will help you out so much. If you have nothing to do, ask your manager don't just sit there, that could get you in trouble. I hate to tell you this, but no matter what you do, you will make mistakes on your first day. Just make sure you correct them and ask for help. I remember making so many mistakes my first day that it drove me to the point where I wanted to quit. :P Don't just leave when your shift ends, make sure you let your manager know you are leaving first. Your shift will most likely not end at exactly 8:00, sometimes earlier, sometimes later; that's why it's important for you to let your manager know. All that being said, just be nice and confident and you'll be just fine. :)

Focus on keeping a positive attitude all day. It will be hard, you will be learning a lot of new information at once, but stay attentive and listen to everything your trainer tells you. Be professional and friendly and don't hesitate to ask questions when you don't understand something.
