Bad SAT vs great ACT scores and applying to Ivy League schools?
-
I have a bit of a problem. I really want to get into Ivy League level/highly selective colleges. I took the SAT this past January and I got a 1780 (CR 600, M 600, W 580), which is pretty bad compared to the mid range that Ivy League schools have. I thought I did very well, and I sent my scores to my top two colleges before I got my scores back, and I was a bit upset (however, the one college requires all scores anyways). I then decided I'd take the ACT in April and the SAT again in May (today). I took the ACT and got a 34 composite (Eng 33, Math 34, Reading 33, Sci 34, Eng/Writing 30, Essay 8), which is considerably higher than my SAT scores. Today, I took the SAT again, and I honestly don't think I did very well, especially considering I had a pounding headache and didn't have the "pep" I needed to take it (but I will be waiting to send my scores this time). I'm really not a bad student, I'm ranked 5th in my class (only because of a mistake on my report card in 9th grade that the school refused to fix, otherwise I would be tied for 1st), I take every honors and AP class possible, a weighted GPA over a 4.0, every extracurricular possible, I hold high offices in many clubs (Key Club Secretary, SADD VP, Color Guard Captain, etc), and it doesn't hurt that I'm hispanic and a first generation. What I'm wondering is will Ivy League colleges penalize me for my SAT scores even though my ACT scores are phenomenal? I've been worried sick over this. I'm not going to be a nanotechnology researcher by going to a community college, or even a typical college. I can't afford to NOT go to an Ivy league level school, and plus, I want to go to school that has a great reputation and has many students around my intelligence level, not significantly lower.

Answer:
Colleges won't mind if your SAT is bad as long as your ACT scores are good, and your 34 is amazing. Wow, I am surprised that there is such a big difference in your scores.
