Whats "French Revolution" in French?

Interceptor or Revolution for my puppy? whats better?

  • Hi, we have a 5 month shorthaired dachshund. Our 1st vet introduced Interceptor and then 2nd one recommended Revolution (which we were charged 18.5 per). I've done a little research and found out some reputation about chances of heartworms while on Revolution....So, I would like to hear if there's other options that works better / been proven by owners. ??

  • Answer:

Interceptor isn't being produced right now so unless your vet has a stockpile of it, you probably won't be able to get a hold of it. Revolution is a good product but I too feel funny about a topical that gets systemically absorbed. Heartgard is another option. Dogs love it because its in a little beefy treat. BUT two things-#1-always buy heartworm preventative through your veterinarian. Your vet has properly stored and handled these medications. They often have rebates and coupons from themanufacturerr. Also when these products are purchased through the vet's office they come with awarrantyy if used properly. Online pet pharmacies don't hold thiswarrantyy. #2 Follow the label directions which means every 28 to 30 days. (Not every 45!) Consider using the product year round. If you don't the pet needs to be heartworm tested before restarting the product. If the dog has come down with heartworms during the time its off preventative, you could kill the dog by restarting the product.

Out of those, I'd pick Interceptor because I've heard a lot of negative reactions to Revolution, plus I don't like topicals. You also take the chance of it washing off before becoming affective. I personally use a generic (Iverhart Plus) for heartworm. I only use it in the summer months and I give it only every 45 days. I don't treat for fleas because I don't feel it necessary to treat for something that my dogs don't have. Instead, I just give my dogs a Capstar pill if they happen to pick up a couple fleas. I like to use as few chemicals in my dogs as possible. Use what you're comfortable using. ADD: I use it every 45 days because it is proven to be just as affective during that duration. I've gotten approval from my vet. And of course, mosquitos are not around in the winter and it needs to be 59 degrees for about a month straight for heartworm to be a problem. It would make no sense to use a heartworm medication in the winter if you have cold winters. Common sense, no mosquitos = no heartworm.
