How to boot linux kernel without bootloader?

Install linux kernel on a laptop?

  • I have an folder laptop that has an error with the operating system (windows) that the CD can't repair, and it can't write over it with a fresh install either for some reason. I figured I would just install the Linux kernel and salvage what I can of that computer and get some practice using the most basic version of Linux as well. I can find directions for installing on a computer that can download the file, but I need to make a boot disk so I can write Linux to the laptop and then start wiping the windows files. How do I do that? I've tried, but I'm not sure where I went wrong, so if someone knows and can just lay out the step by step, that would be great.

  • Answer:

If you have got the .iso file, you could download a software called poweriso (or an other .iso reader thingy) and try to run the boot cd in that program.

Other answers

If you're using a Windows operating system to burn the disk then you'll need to either buy, or come across an application that can burn .ISO files to a disk. If you're using a Linux distro to burn the disk, then most Linux distrobutions already come pre-packaged with a disk burning application that can handle .ISO files. What version of Linux are you trying to install btw?
