How do I enable the mail function in wordpress?

• I have a wordpress blog that I host on my own computer. I don't know how the whole emailing thing works, but what I do know is that the mail() function isnt enabled. Currently when someone registers or whenever you want to reset your password, no emails can be sent. I really need this to be fixed. How do I enable this and make sure it works? I don't mind using a gmail account to send those emails. I have tried basically all email plugins that allow different ways to send emails, and non of them worked. The thing that I am confused is, for using either the mail() function or a gmail account, do I have toh with port 25 (or whatever is needed) in order for it to work? I have searched google and cannot find anything that seems to be in my way of understanding and of work. One other question, if I enable the mail() function, does it only send, or can it receive emails? And how do you view them?

  You need to install a mailserver. And you want to be careful with that - some spammer could use it and spam folks and you would get shut down.
