Why do you get a bloody nose?

Why would I get a bloody nose during cardio?

  • It wasn't that intense. Just 20 minutes of different floor cardio stuff. I am 5ft and 112 pounds - just average, normal weight for my height. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was really young so when I get that tightness in my chest and that cough, I just figure it's my asthma.. but I don't know about the bloody noses. It doesn't always happen but it's happened enough that now I'm starting to wonder.. The only health condition I have is PCOS which puts me at risk for heart disease and diabetes but as far as I know, as long as I continue to maintain a healthy weight, I'm good. Not sure if it's related but just in case.. I wasn't exercising regularly but for the past couple weeks or so I have been making it a daily routine because I realized it's the only way I ovulate (which balances my wacky PCOS hormones). Anyway, maybe my heart is just freaking out trying to keep up with my workout because I'm out of shape. But seriously 20 minutes of cardio, psh. My body feels fine (I actually feel great) when I work out it's just my heart and lungs are like AHHHH STOP MOVING. And then my nose bleeds. SO maybe I just need to get used to it? Unless you think it might be something else? I have a physical at the end of the month so I will mention it to my doctor.. Just until then, I'd like your opinion.

  • Answer:

oh boy! Did you say you have asthma? Then you should be really cautious and careful with cardio exercise as it deals with oxygen and air control. I highly suggest you to consult your personal trainer and let him tell you what to do. For some reason i feel like cardio is a bad option for your physical activity. Please consult your trainer and do the right exercise before it can harm you.

You might just have thin walls on the blood vessels in your nasal cavity that just can't handle the spike in blood pressure during exercise, leading to epistaxis - a nose bleed. Not much to do about that if that is indeed the case. However, it might be something more serious. You may want to get a ECG done while under stress in order to see what's going on. Do mention it to your doctor - your doctor might be able to suggest a series of tests in order to find out whether there's anything to worry about or not.
