How can I draw a diagram for these forces on objects? (10 pt's for best answer)?
-
I am kind of new to Physics to have trouble understanding some of it. I have a question that requires me to draw a diagram, but not sure how. The question is: A steel ship and a steel paper clip can float on water but a solid steel sphere sinks. This behaviour can be understood in terms of three forces: due to gravity, buoyancy, and surface tension. Use diagram to show why each object floats or sinks. Can someone please explain to me on how I can draw these? Like, for each object, where to label and what not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou!

Answer:
For solid sphere: One long arrow downwards, starting from the center of the sphere. Gravity. One shorter arrow upwards, starting from the center of the sphere. Buoyancy. No surface tension, as it is underwater. It cancels out. For paper clip: One short arrow downwards, starting from the center of the paper clip. Gravity On even shorter arrow upwards, starting from the center of the paper clip. Buoyancy One very long arrow upwards, starting from the point, where paper clip touches water. Surface tension. For ship: One short arrow downwards, starting from the center of the sphere. Gravity. One longer arrow upwards, starting from the center of the sphere. Buoyancy. One very short arrow upwards, starting from the point where ship touches water. Surface tension. Good luck.
