How to compare several remediation methods and choose the most cost-efficient one?

  • Hello, everyone. At the moment i try to solve an exercise of the hydrology/ecological economics which is based on the comparison between three remediation methods. The task is as follows: Given: LK = 500 kg yr- (emission from the source) α = 0.37 (attenuation rate) A = 1000 m2 (size of anarea of pollutant distribution) E1 = 85% (reduction effect) E2 = 98% (reduction effect) E3a = 0.15 g/day m2 = 0.00015 (kg/day m2) (reduction effect) E3b = 1.5 g/day m2 = 0.0015 (kg/day m2) (reduction effect) E3b = 15 g/day m2 = 0.0015 (kg/day m2) (reduction effect) M1 = 5.25 SEK m-2 yr- (annual reduction cost per one kilogram of pollutant) M2 = 7.35 SEK m-2 yr- (annual reduction cost per one kilogram of pollutant) M3 = 3.50 SEK m-2 yr- (annual reduction cost per one kilogram of pollutant) To calculate: 1. L = -? (the total load of pollutants to the lake) 2. to determine which one of three alternative remediation methods should be applied in order to achieve a 10% reduction of the load from source S1 to the lake. The estimated attenuation fraction α1 = 0.37. While i could easily calculate the total load, the calculation of the area that is remediated (RA) did not went correct. I tried to calculate it as folows: RA = E * A, but later i have to use an RA/A ratio which gives me a E value back. May someone, please, help me to solve this exercise? Thank you very much for any help. :)
