I think I may have torn my Achilles tendon and the ligaments near the heal. Do I need surgery?
-
Several months ago, I fell while running. I initially though I had sprained my ankle, but it hadn't gotten better even after several months. My Achilles tendon hurts, and so does the bottom and sides of my heel. I may have torn the Achilles tendon and surrounding ligaments. I'm afraid of having surgery because I feel that I will not be able to sprint, run long distances, or play any sports every again if I have surgery. I had surgery on my hand almost a year ago, and it still hurts and I don't have full mobility. The doctor said I probably won't get full mobility back and I'll probably have to live with the pain. I'm afraid of that happening if I get surgery on my ankle. What do you think? Will the ligaments and tendons or muscles heal if I just leave it alone and walk on crutches for like 2 months?

If you tore your Achilles tendon, then you will need surgery to repair it. You would be off your foot for about 8 months to a year if it was torn.

I had an achilles sprain last December and that was like 5 months ago. My achilles feels way better now. First few months, felt terrible and I couldn't really walk or do any movement with the foot. The pain was so bad, I wanted to rip my foot off! Then, 3 to 4 months later, I felt somewhat better and could walk more than before. At 5 months, I can walk with no pain except for some days where I do feel some pain, but it's rare. Then, stops after a little time after. Hopefully, after some more time, I won't feel anything. I hope you didn't try to play sports or work out on it too early. That's the worse thing you could do with injures. My Dr told me I shouldn't do anything, but walk on it and "VERY LIGHT WALKING." Then, after I felt 100%, which would be around half a year or more I can start doing other stuff. I think you have achilles tendonitis or achilles tear. Achilles tears can either be whole or partial tear. They are NOT usually heal by themselves and especially if you're been working out on it. So, tears need surgeries. Tendonitis is whole another thing and if you got this, you can kiss you're sports days good bye. Yeah, MRI are expensive, but they do tell the DR what's really going on inside the body. They're NOT like X-Rays, which only show bones and don't show jack about achilles. MRI is the one that can show ligaments, tendons, and muscles and bones. That's why they are so much more expansive than x-rays, which can only show bones. I was planning on getting a MRI done myself, but my foot healed, so I didn't need it anymore. I don't see why getting surgery won't let you play sports anymore. The Pros get achilles tears too and they still play after getting surgeries. It will take A LOT TIME to heal though. But hey, if you want to walk around in crutches for 2 months, let me know how you're doing with that. Could work. You never know.
