Should I buy an HD DVD player to prolong my Blu Ray player's life?
-
I currently own a 4 year old Samsung DVD/VCR machine, a 7 month old PS3, a 3 month old Full HD LCD Samsung TV, a HUGE collection of DVDs, a couple of PS3 games and handful of Blu Ray movies. Personally I prefer to play DVDs on the Samsung machine and not the PS3 (so I can prolong its life since I already play games and watch Blu Ray movies on it). Unfortunately it seems that the DVD player on my Samsung DVD/VCR machine is starting to give in (movies tend to stick more frequently these days, even after a proper cleaning of the lens). Now, I can either switch to watching my DVDs on my PS3, or I can purchase a decent brand of HD DVD player (Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, LG, etc). I think the second option is better, because then my poor PS3 won't be taxed with having to play DVDs, PS3 games AND Blu Ray movies. What do you think?

Answer:
What you meant to ask was, should I buy an upscaling/upconverting DVD player to take some of the load off of the PS3. Sure. You can get such a DVD player for as little as $45, such as the Sony 510H player from Amaz*n. We have the prior 500 model, and it works just fine. Don't forget the HDMI cable.

Yes! I just bought a near new XE1 (XA2). Their DVD upscalers are better than most cheap blu ray players made today besides the oppo. These things are built like tanks! A format is only dead if u listen to the morons that harvest the heard of sheep! I put the disc in and press the play button, and it plays HD movies, I thought the screen be grey! I just bought a stack of HD-DVDs on ebay dirt cheap to add to my already growing 150 discs. You will always find a player on the internet for sale.

You dont want "HD DVD" but you want a BluRay player which will up-convert DVD's as well as let you play BluRay disks. Some of these players also have networking so they include Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, etc. The PS3 is a great system - but eats power like 3 refrigerators and puts out heat like an oven. So for playing movies - a dedicated BluRay player is probably better. Try this site for some discounts from Amazon merchants. http://www.bestbluraydeals.com/

Where do expect to find an HD DVD player? That format was discontinued 4 years ago.
