Is it legal to put copyright on your work?

Would it be copyright infringement if I would make animation parody movie of Avatar and put it on Youtube?

• I do not own rights to James Cameron's Avatar! Would it be copyright infringement if I would make original parody animation movie of James Cameron's Avatar and put it on Youtube? It's said that I can upload only something I own - the original content. But movie I would make would be original... on other though I do not own the rights to Avatar movie so do I still can use it in creative work without license? Question #2: If I can use it. Then can I put Google AdSense advertisements on video and earn money like that from people watching it if they click add? I know it's illegal to sell other people work, but is it also illegal to put ads on it? Since it is my channel and I don't sell video... just put ads on it? And it would be original video only the idea of Avatar is not mine? Question #3: Also, if it is illegal, would it be also illegal if I would not put adds but simply just get more views and subscribers. And that would help me make more money from other videos so in some kind of sence I make money using Avatar... but I don't own right to it? Would it be illegal too? Confused... help me understand pleas... =/

• Answer:

  Section 107 of US copyright law states that parodies are allowed as long as you are not making any money out of it. Can't make any money what so ever out of it though. So with the Google AdSense you must own everything in the video, so you can't use that. 3rd would probably be illegal too.
