What are the best martial arts to do?

What is the best knife disarm, Doesn't have to be martial arts?

  • I'm researching and I've came across many different ways to disarm a knife attacker. But there are some martial artists I've interviewed who say certain disarms taught by martial arts never work and end up being easily countered in which the defender loses use of their hands, then I talk to other martial artists who contradict the statement saying the same disarms work. I'd really appreciate it if someone who knows more than me or who has better research than me could tell me what disarms actually work in a real life attack and which don't. Many thanks

  • Answer:

The disarm you use depends upon your training and the situation. You can tell a lot about a person's intent and ability by how he wields a knife and by the type of knife and even by its condition. These are all desperate and dangerous situations. You have to get real training, not watch videos or chat on line.

One of the easiest way to disarm a knife wielder I know of is to spill a hot mug of coffee on their knife hand, but then you can also spill it on their face and they still probably will drop the knife too. As for knife disarming techniques, there is no such thing as a full proof technique, all techniques can be countered, a technique's effectiveness just depends on both the practitioner's and the knife wielders skill and experience. But as a rule of thumb, the more simple and economic the movements of the techniques are, the better the chances of it working.

There is no best knife disarm! All knife disarms are dangerous! You are likely to get cut! Often it is taught that you will get cut, but it is important not to get killed! Shienara gave a good explanation. too. I don't like to say that everyone will get cut because there is a slim possibility that you are lucky enough not to get cut. You need to have good training in order to increase you chances of survival. Most schools do not teach weapon disarms to beginners or children Normally it is taught to advanced ranks. I'm rethinking this as I currently have 2 students that have been faced with weapons at school. One student was a gun the other was a knife. I used to work in a middle school and I recall a 7th grade girl that brought a knife to school to fight an 8th grade girl. I ended up using my training to take the knife. I had just finished joking with some other staff in my room about me not breaking up anymore fights. I was going to let the police break them up. I was actually talking about stopping adults from attacking the staff. I had just stopped that the day before and it was rumored that that person and other family was going to get that teacher who was in one of the staff in my room at the time on break. I heard something going on in the hallway I stepped out and saw this girl going in he backpack. I didn't know why. Then she puled out the knife and went after the other girl. I got in the middle. she came towards me and I used a simple wrist lock as I stepped offline. I asked her nicely to drop the weapon 3 times as I put more pressure on the joint. The 3rd time I put a lot of pressure to gain control and end the threat. I never saw a hall clear so fast as it did when the weapon came out. Those kids look like roaches scattering when the light come on, except for the 2 involved. Had she done something different with the knife it would have required me to do something different. I was lucky not to get cut. Any other person would have been cut if they had tried to stop this.

Walk up to them and karate chop them simultaneously on the wrist just where the hand joins the wrist, do it with both hands and the knife will come flying out of their hand - hopefully but only if they are not expecting it. Ideally you need someone to show this to you so you do it properly. Do it in a real life situation and get it wrong and you are in trouble. I know another move but I won't even begin to explain that as it's for advanced MA only.

Depends on how the knife is held. If it's out front use a place kicker kick to send it in the air. In close use a chair or bar stool. Best defense? Shoe leather. Keeps the attacker out of reach and hurts his hand. Still the best way to disarm a knife wielder is to shoot him.

You rush a gun, run from a knife. Old mafia street fighter told me this here in Boston - one of the 'wiseguys'.

The best way is to grab the knife arm so that the first and index fingers are locked in a circle, and you must fully commit to make it like a vise--grip as hard as you can, and then strongly twist--you twist strong enough, it will cause pain to the attacker, so even if the attacker does not drop the knife, you will have a few seconds' lead to get away. This is the common ju-jitsu way of disarming. No guarantees except for the pain the attacker will face. If the knife is forcibly dropped, the disarm is successful. But of course, to avoid being stabbed or cut when you do this, you must do these two things as if it was one continuous motion. Fatal mistake happens when you do grab the attacking arm but don't twist it immediately. Your life could be in jeopardy if you do this. The second best way is to deflect with both a block (preferably) with the arm and a strike with another hand or even your other knee or other foot, enough to distract him so you can flee, and this is often used in Krav Maga training. Obviously, you cannot disarm the knife itself by pulling on the front end of the knife. It is not a gun, and obviously it is way too sharp and you risk being cut or stabbed if you do this....
